Quarter horses are extremely fast. Especially over short distances, they can reach breathtaking speeds. They proved this in quarter-mile races in the 18th century, frequently outracing even English Thoroughbreds.  Quarter horses were named after these races.  Quarter horses also have what’s known as cow sense, which helps their riders when driving herds of cattle.
