The colour range follows the extended version of Goethe's "Theory of Colours'. Each tone has been adjusted so that it can be mixed well with the others. Harmonious intermediate gradations and boundary-less colour blending are also possible when using the wet-on-wet technique.

They can be used with all usual watercolouring techniques.

Stockmar watercolours are ideal for transparent painting and when mixed with white can be used for non-transparent painting. They are produced from gum arabic and the finest light-resistant colour pigments have a very high yield-value and remain completely water-soluble when dry. The colour tones have been chosen so that they can be mixed to yield all intermediate shades without losing their brilliance and intensity.

Here are some general guidelines for mixing. It also depends on if you are doing wet-on-wet painting, or using dry paper - in both cases, high quality watercolour paper gives the best results.

"Stockmar Watercolour Paints have a pasty consistency and have to be mixed with water before using. With a paintbrush, put a dab of paint into a small dish and add drops of water with a second paintbrush, then mix together. Repeat this procedure until you have the desired colour tone and the paint has an inklike consistency. If you want the paint to be brilliant, use less water; if you want the paint to shimmer slightly, add more water. It’s best to paint a sample on a piece of normal paper. Then you will discover that you need more paint for an intensive shade of yellow than you do for a similar shade of blue or red."
